A Death Café is a welcoming, informal space where people can gather to discuss death and mortality with others.  The original concept created by Jon Underwood was that there is no specific objective, conclusion or pre-determined theme.  It is a discussion group, not a grief support group or a counselling session.

The lovely Emily Myers will be running occasional ‘pop-up’ Death Cafés at our Tudor Barn. ‍

The idea is that a dozen or so people, often strangers, gather in a welcoming environment to share coffee, tea and cake and discuss death. It’s as simple and as profound as that.

The objective of every Café meeting is to offer an accessible, respectful and confidential space for open discussion about death and dying, making it a bit more common place, and helping people to talk to relatives, parents and children about it. It is a discussion group, not a grief support group or a counselling session.

We find that by opening up about a topic that many find difficult to talk about, powerful things can happen. It can help people feel that they’re not alone in their experience. They realise that no question is ever strange to ask. That talking about death can be liberating, and even life-affirming.  We talk about anything and everything linked to death with questions like: How would you like to say ‘goodbye’? Are you finding talking about death to your children difficult? What are your end-of-life options? What would a good death look and feel like? What are the differences between cremation and burial?

Emily Myers is a funeral celebrant, ritual holder and nature lover and experienced in hosting Death Cafés. While Emily will lead the discussion, there is  never an agenda. Those who attend drive each session so no two Cafés will be the same. Each Café serves to help those attending to talk openly about death, its reality, its meaning, and its role in our lives – and to make talking about death and end of life easier in the future.
